Author Why are Microsoft exams so expensive?

I have to get a big loan to pay for my course, books and living expenses for 3 months so I can study full time. I study really hard to get ready for the exam, abd then I think to myself, who is making the profit out of charging so much for each exam? Is it Microsoft? Don't they have enough money yet. I do not feel that people are being encouraged to take certification courses and exams. Surely if more IT staff are needed all the time an improved system of taking exams should be used? Even something simple like all core exams for the cost of one and if you fail one then to take it again you pay the full cost. I'm from the UK so I don't know if people in other countries have it different from us.
Thanks for listening, Paul

Hello Paul, I have no explaination as to why the exams are so expensive and in a sense I agree with you about MS having enough money already. Here so figures and facts for you to compare with your prices there in the UK. We have crash courses here with schools that offer MCSE in 7 days for $1,200 - $3,500 dollars US or Cisco courses for similar prices and time frames. You can self study for the exams at home if you want and by only the reccomended study material, and then pay for your exam which is $100.00 each exam pass or fail.

I am taking classes at a Jr. college here in California, prices are reasonable and the classroom atmosphere is very benifical for sharing information and getting questions answered as well as the hands on experience with the labs we do. But once the course is completed the exam is still $100.00 dollars apiece. If your lucky enough to be imployed in the industry already some companies will pay for the traing and the certifications ( not my case) which cuts the costs considerablly. So there you have a little information about the prices here State Side I think we are in the same boat so to speak and Ms in just getting fatter from us all..........but as always that's just ..........My two cents worth.............

Microsoft doesn't get the money you're paying to go to the training school, their only charges are $100 for the test and optionaly buying their books and programs. I agree that this is a bit expensive, but it's actually in line with Novell and Cisco, and a lot less then CompTIA.

I think the training centers are actually overcharging much worse then Microsoft is. A lot of people will pay thousands of dollars to obtain their MCSE at training centers while it really could be done for under $1000 with self-study.

Paul, don't forget the value of MCP by itself -- you only need one test, and that M$ certifications aren't the only game in town.

Of the $100 you pay for the test, I think at least half goes to the testing center to cover the administration of the test.

I don't know if it's the same everywhere, but the college i work for offers those tests and the guy that is in charge told me that they only make around 7 bucks out of each tests. Is it because it's a college or something i really have no clue.

You have to remember that you can get an MCP for £65. Some of the other certs N+ for instance will set you back £120 - £130.

Also, I am doing a Masters at uni and students can take some of the exams under the AATP scheme. It is only available at centres which are AATP providers (usually testing centres which are an educational institution). Thus, you can sit some exams for £35.

Feel free to use the current rate of exchange between the pound and the dollar to convert!

Exams that I have sat for £35 are

Net Ess, NT 4.0, and NT Server.

Enterprise, TCP and IIS are not under the AATP scheme as they are for commercial purposes, however you could sit 072-028 Admin SQL server as an elective towards your MCSE and this is under AATP.

Also, if you are interested, I am sure there are a couple of MCSD exams in there too.

To check which exams are under the scheme and where test centres are, register with VUE.com
