I have read that Java is more portable than other languages due to bytcode. Instaed of having a separate compiler for each platofrm, the Java compiler compiles the source code into bytecode and then a Java Virtual Machine for each platform intepretes the bytecode into object code to execute it. My question is this: how does this make Java more portable? I understand that it takes effort to make a compiler for each system, but isn't this what you have to do when creating a Java Virtual Machine?
